Accompanied Ashes Repatriation to Seattle - Hand carried across the Atlantic
27th April 2026A personal account of a hand carried accompanied ashes repatriation from Essex to Seattle, USA, carried out this month with compassion, care and complete dedication.
At Ashes Escorted, every journey we undertake carries with it a profound sense of privilege and responsibility. This is the story of one of our most recent journeys - a fully accompanied ashes repatriation from Essex to Seattle, Washington, carried out this month for a family who trusted us to bring their loved one home across the Atlantic.
Working with Drew & Son Funeral Directors.
This journey began through our relationship with Drew & Son Funeral Directors, based in Abridge, Romford. We are proud to work alongside funeral directors who share our commitment to dignity, care and the highest standards of service. If you are a funeral director looking for a trusted ashes delivery service, please see our funeral professionals page for more information on how we work together.
Going above and beyond - working with a local solicitor.
One of the aspects of this journey that made it particularly significant was our involvement in working alongside a local solicitor to ensure that important legal documents were also safely transported to the family in Seattle. We understand that bereavement often involves complex practical and legal matters, and we were honoured to play a part in ensuring the family received everything they needed at such a difficult time.
This is a testament to the bespoke and flexible nature of our service. We do not simply transport cremated remains - we work with families, funeral directors and other professionals to provide a truly personal and comprehensive service tailored entirely to individual needs.
The Journey
The cremated remains were personally collected from Drew & Son Funeral Directors in Abridge, Romford, with all release documentation carefully checked and signed before departure. From that moment, the ashes were hand carried by us for the entirety of the journey, through the airport, on board the aircraft as hand luggage, and all the way to Seattle. They were never left unattended, never placed in cargo and never passed to a third party.
We understand that for families waiting on the other side of the world, every update matters. Throughout the day we provided regular flight updates so the family in Seattle always knew exactly where their loved one was and when to expect us.
The Delivery
We met the family at Seattle Airport and took the time to hand over the cremated remains personally, with the care and sensitivity that this significant moment deserved. The family have plans for a meaningful scattering ceremony - a deeply personal tribute to their loved one. We were honoured to play our part in making that possible.
Moments like these remind us why Ashes Escorted exists. Handing over a loved one's ashes is never simply a task. It is one of the most significant moments in a family's grief journey and one we approach with the deepest respect, sensitivity and care.
When families are separated by distance
One of the most challenging aspects of bereavement in the modern world is that families are often scattered across different countries and continents. When a loved one passes away in the UK, the responsibility of ensuring their cremated remains reach family overseas can feel overwhelming, particularly at an already difficult time.
This is exactly where Ashes Escorted can help. No matter where in the world your family is based, we are here to bridge that distance personally and with complete accountability. We understand that geography should never be a barrier to bringing a loved one home.
Grief does not end with the Funeral
We have come to understand deeply through our work that grief does not follow a schedule. For many families, particularly those living far apart from one another, the period following the Funeral can be one of the most isolating and difficult times of all. When the busyness of arrangements subsides and life becomes quieter, the weight of loss can feel more intense than ever.
At Ashes Escorted, we are always here to listen. Whether you have questions about the repatriation process, need guidance on documentation, or simply need someone to talk to about your loved one and what this final journey means to you, we will always make time.
